About Rivoli Lakes Nature Preserve

Rivoli Lakes Nature Preserve is located in the Chiricahua Mountains of Cochise County, Arizona, covering high-altitude terrain characterized by mixed conifer forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic rock formations. The preserve centers around several glacial lakes, including Upper and Lower Rivoli Lakes, which provide excellent habitat for native trout species and attract anglers and wildlife watchers alike. The region's elevation closer to 9,400 feet offers cooler temperatures and distinct flora and fauna compared to the desert valleys below. Historically, the surrounding Chiricahua Mountains have been home to Apache peoples and later attracted miners and settlers during the mining booms of the 19th century; today, the nature preserve helps protect this unique ecological and cultural landscape. Accessed primarily via Skyline Drive and several forest roads, the preserve offers visitors hiking trails that range from easy strolls to challenging climbs, photography opportunities of alpine vistas, and tranquil camping amid forested settings. Due to its relatively remote location, visitors often experience solitude and a strong connection with nature. Wildlife is abundant here, including black bears, mule deer, and numerous bird species such as the Rivoli's hummingbird, after which the preserve is named. The preserve's blend of volcanic geology, clear mountain lakes, and rich biodiversity make it a prized destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to escape the heat of Arizona’s lower deserts and explore a unique landscape.
